A few little running things for you to consider utilising the extended spring break period. Designed for MapRunF (orienteering/nav app for phone) but also maps included below for those wanting them.
I will try to add more as the ‘off-season’ progresses if there is an appetite.
Follow the countryside code. Carry a first aid kit, spare clothes, whistle, map, compass, food & water, torch & spare batteries. Let someone know where you are going or run with someone but don’t lick each other. Stay safe out there – carry toilet roll & dried pasta at all times.
All course are located in:

After you have downloaded them once you can access via the “Access Local Events (Offline)” button.
Also please consider making a small donation to support local fell running projects & use of the WFRA map license.
John Morris Points Courses
John gave me a points score map of the Clwydians maybe 2 years ago now and it laid on the shelf looking at me until now. I thought some of you may get some interest from it. Many of the original (red disk) markers are now faded (pink) and some are missing (posts replaced). I will hopefully reinstate some of these if I get chance so the people who want to just use paper maps can do so – and know when they are at the actual control rather than floating in the wilderness.
Bwlch Penbarras (AVOID at WEEKENDS!!)
Start is the circular viewpoint in the north car park. Finish is by the parking meter in the south car park. Don’t run past the finish until you finish!
Short Course 1-hour – online as JM_Short
- Collect as many controls in the 60 minute period.
- 10 controls each worth 20 points each – so 200 points maximum
- Lose 10 points for every minute late.
- I reckon this is 10k and 500m
- Map: JM_Short_60min 1:12500 scale (double 25k scale)
I have renumbered the control points to those that you see on the red markers. This is to allow me to run the long course as a true variable score point course. I will look to renumber the marker posts and replace those missing (note: #11 is missing and I forgot to check #22 yet – runners red mist!).
Long Course 3-hour – not yet online
About 26km & 1300m – so circa Sheeptracks distance to complete but obviously you don’t need to do the entire thing to be ‘scored’.
John Morris Points from Cilcain (to avoid BPB!)
Start/finish from the waterworks. Park by the waterworks, up in the village responsibility or even the viewpoint parking above the village.
Map JM_Cilcain 1:25k at A4
2 hour points course. 28 controls @ 20 per control. Penalty 10 points per minute late. You will not get them all – this is a strategic one!
Halkyn Points Course – Halkyn Mountain
Park offroad responsibly please. No control markers.
Map Halkyn 20k V120 1:20000 scale at A4
2 hour points course. 25 controls @ 20 per control. Penalty 10 points per minute late. Someone may be able to get them all if their nav & local knowledge is good.
Cilcain MTBO – designed for MTB/CX but equally fun for trail running
Start/finish from the waterworks.
Control markers are smaller red ones – #61 currently not there…but will still trigger.
Map Cilcain_MTBO 1:25k at A4
2 hour points course. 17 controls @ 20 per control. Penalty 10 points per minute late.
No code. Start is Cilcain Community Carpark. Finish is just back on the playing field near the toilets. Remember there is no access agreement in place round the side of Moel Arthur CP6-CP7 so you will have to use the bridleway down the road. Also no access agreement to cross the field north of CP9.
The course map is blank but you can turn the blank map off now – though the position & track options are locked off – i.e. you are on your own. Course map is located in same directory as above.

Maprun Test Courses – Bwlch Penbarras (AVOID WEEKENDS!!!)
These were setup as maprun test courses last year. These course and features are useful for you to get familiar with the app.
There are NO markers on the hill – just control descriptions but some ground features are better than others. The maprun maps for these courses are blank (but you can set the transparency in the settings to see the underlying google earth picture but this will eat your data if you are not careful). You can also set your current gps position to show on the screen and your track for these courses. There are two 4km courses and a combined course of 8km. All have lock codes – make a note of them!
The start control for these courses are just the other side of the gate below the north car park. The finish control is by the benches on south side of the road. So don’t go into this area until you have run the full course you want to.
